Part of the reason it takes me so long to write these books has to do with wrestling with my built-in censor, my self-censorship. You know, one of the things about shame and trauma: shame and trauma are anti-languages. Shame and trauma are the devourer of narratives, the devourer of language, and I think for many of us who have had experiences that lay outside of what we would call the healthy, the normative, often we struggle so much to be able to understand it and integrate it into our heads, but then to bear witness -and to bear witness means for you to articulate it in a way that other people hear it- that is an extraordinary challenge.
